In Portela da Azoia, Loures, the upgrading of Avenida 25 de Abril rethinks an urban axis of some 1,150 metres, with the works concentrated on a stretch of about 830 metres between the two roundabouts that bound it. The proposal starts from a rebalancing between car and pedestrian, returning scale and comfort to a through route.
The carriageway is reduced to 7.0 metres, freeing space for the pedestrian realm without compromising traffic. The junctions and critical points of the alignment are resolved, parking is organised along the avenue and the surfacing is renewed, in coordination with the local authority.
The public realm is reconfigured around a continuous and accessible pedestrian route: pavements of 1.5 metres, crossings sized according to the hierarchy of the streets (4.0 metres on the avenue and 3.0 metres on the roads joining it) and an accessibility plan that secures comfortable routes for people with reduced mobility. New public transport stops, street furniture and the reinstatement of public lighting and telecommunications services complete the scheme.
Public lighting is renewed with LED luminaires and technology, with the columns repositioned close to the walls so as to free the pavement. Signage, vertical and horizontal, was conceived for a simple and safe reading, appropriate to the urban character of the avenue. The work brought together the various infrastructure and public realm disciplines in a single coordinated solution.
